I dont know if Time Magazine is available online, but I read the cover story from (I think) last week that was interesting.

It touched on how many Ivy League quality kids now are opting for a good, more affordable public school or a small liberal arts school willing to give scholarships money where students work very closly with faculty.

More importantly, it mentioned overblown image of the Ivy League. So much aura around them...youre really paying for a name...the same quality of actual education can be had at lesser known schools that are more affordable. Then there was the grade inflation debate.

Finally, one of the most disturbing issues was that of legacy policies (Dad went there and that helps junior get in). This is a problem because the Ivies bill themselves as the best and the brightest, yet often times they lower their standards for a legacy. One researcher in the article who has a book coming out said that being a legacy can sometimes be as much as a 200 or 300 pt SAT advantage (on 1600 scale) over a non-legacy kid (he also mentioned that thats more of an advantage than being minority). Thus a 1300 legacy might get in over a 1500 non-legacy.

The policy seems to make the whole percpetion of Ivies being these reservoirs of intellectual development and bastion of the best and brightest look less valid. Reeks of nepotism.

I saw something the other day along these lines that going to an Ivy league doesn't get you anything but less money in the bank. The amount of CEO's and HIGH salary corporate employees that came from Ivy league schools is far less than non Ivyu league schools, and they did take into account that there aren't as many Ivy schools as others. I have never thought that they were that much better, I mean they have to teach the same things that other schools do, it's not like they get text books with more information in them and such.
